Well, we are all finished with Dr. Daly! We had our final ultra sound with him today and we got to see the baby moving around. He/she was actually moving his/her arms and legs. He/she kind of looks like a little teddy bear in the picture...with cute little arms and legs. :)
The babies heartbeat was 177 today! It sounded so strong! It's amazing how fast it's growing...the doctor said about 1mm a day. 10 days ago the baby was 12mm and today it was 28mm.
Nick and I talked today about how we are going to tell our news. WE CANNOT WAIT!!!
Tomorrow we have our first appt. in Big Rapids with the nurse educator. We will learn more about what's next. Saturday we leave for Key West...kind of like our babymoon!

Ultra Sound #2
Friday March 18th,
Well, today was what we call a "reassurance ultrasound". I needed to be sure everything was ok and since we have gone through so much, I think I am more terrified/paranoid that something awful is going to happen. We got reassurance alright...the baby has more than doubled in size and it's heartbeat is at 166bpm (right where it should be).
We are anxiously counting down the days until we can share our news and when we are more assured that we are safe and sound.
Currently we are 8 weeks and 4 days along. Only 4 1/2 weeks until we can share our joy!!! :)

Ultra Sound #1

THE BEST DAY OF MY LIFE...thus far!!!
On the way down to the ultra sound my stomach was flipping. I was quiet...so was Nick. We were both trying to be disconnected...impossible! We were both trying to prepare for the worst. Obviously we were hoping for the best...for what seemed like the impossible.
I could feel my heart pounding in my chest and my palms pouring out sweat. The first thing Dr. Daly said was "well the first news is, it's in your uterus." I crack a smile (still trying to fight back high hopes), I clench the sides of the ultra sound so tight, bracing myself for the worst. "The next good news," he says "there's a heartbeat!" That's when I saw it, a tiny flicker in the middle of a dark circle in the center of the screen. I look at Nick and we smile...that was the best smile we have both shared with each other. We knew exactly what each other was thinking. I wanted so badly to just grab him and hug him and cry. BUT I didn't I kept my composure and I'm glad I did because without hesitation Dr. Daly let us hear that beautiful flickering heart beat! We heard it beat! We heard that life beat! Our prayers WERE answered.
On the way home I stared at the first pictures of my baby and couldn't stop smiling. Nick and I both agreed that we would keep this secret between the two of us until we were through the first trimester. There's always a risk and if something did happen we did not want to put our family and friends through the disapointment again.
So for now, we wait again, we wait to explode with our news, to scream it from the mountain tops. For now, we try to keep our precious most amazing secret safe...

Blood Test #3
Thursday March 3, 2011
I was so nervous about getting this test done. What if the numbers hadn't gone down? What if it "hadn't taken care of itself?" What if it was an ectopic pregnancy?
My morning went on as usual, my thoughts were actually quite distracted that day, as it was a busy day in first grade. Then, the school secretary called down to my room and told me that my doctor was on line #1 and could I take the call? I knew it would be quick. My heart sank. On the other end was Dr. Daly's voice. His exact words "Melissa, what did I say when we first met?" I responded blankly...what was he getting at? "I said to you, I don't trust any other Dr. or facility but myself or my own." "OK," I replied. "Well, he says, either the lab that you went to us messed up big time last week, or they were lying to us, because your BETA numbers today are now in the 11,000 range...going along with the first numbers from the very first test. You need to come in on Monday for an ultra sound so we can see what is going on with this pregnancy."
WHAT???!!!! That's right, my desperate prayers that this was all a mistake may have really been answered. Could it be true? I can't get excited, I was just now getting over the heartbreak of last week. I will go about my business this weekend as though we are about to learn nothing new at this ultra sound and that way my heart will not be broken again.

Blood Test #2
I went into the hospital lab yet again, for another blood test. All week I had been feeling light headed and a little crampy. I wasn't sure if they were normal pains or feelings because this is all new to me.
This experience at the lab felt so different than the last one. I just had this strange feeling inside of me.
Hours later, the doctor called me. The news was not good. He told me that the newest blood test had inidcated that my BETA numbers had dropped dramatically from 512 on Monday to 60 on Friday. He said that this kind of a drop indicated that the pregnancy was not viable and that he was concerned that it could possibly be an ectopic pregnancy. I was so devestated that I couldn't even ask him any questions. He simply said wait it out, it's early enough that "it should take care of itself". He ordered another blood test for the following Thursday to make sure the numbers had gone back down...thus indicating that it was over.
At this point I called Nick and we both cried (while we were at work). I decided that I needed support so I called and emailed family and friends to not only let them in on our secret but to fill them in on our devestation.
When I arrived home from work that afternoon Lynne, Lindsey and my great friend Traci were there waiting for me, to comfort me, to support me. The next week was the worst week of my life. I have never felt so empty and sad. Our dreams were crushed.

Blood Test #1
Monday February 21, 2011
It didn't hurt...not at all! :)
I got the phone call a few hours later from the clinic confirming that yes my BETA numbers indicated a postive pregnancy! YAY!!! I was ordered to go back on Friday for another test, just to make sure that my numbers were continuing to climb.
Sooooo...again we wait. At this point we aren't sure if we should be excited, but a part of me feels as though we deserve so much to celebrate. It's been a long road.
We called Nick's parents to tell them the news. Lynne cried, Bill shook Nick's hand and gave me a tight hug. Later we recieved emails and phone calls from them telling us again how elated they were and that they promised our secret was safe.

The Night We Found Out
Friday February 18, 2011
I decided to take a pregnancy test in the middle of the night. I knew as soon as I woke up I wouldn't be able to get back to sleep unless I did. Otherwise I would be thinking about it all night. I waited for what seemed like hours all alone in the dark living room because I didn't want to wake up Nick. I couldn't believe my eyes when the test said "positive" and I couldn't stop double checking it. I stayed up and stared at it for an hour or so and then decided to try and go back to sleep. I must have made too much noise getting into bed because I woke Nick up. He looked up at me and I must have been smiling because he sat right up and said "What?" I showed him the test and he couldn't believe it.
I think at first we were shocked and not sure how to react...we have wanted this for so long. Was it true? After laying in bed for the next 3 hours, I finally got up and got ready for the day...checking the test every few minutes just to be sure I wasn't dreaming. I called the doctor's office as soon as I could to find out what they wanted me to do. They ordered a blood test for Monday (3 days later). All weekend we will wait...and wait...and wait...
